CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"If you're going to tear down a hero, you should never forget that you're tearing down someone else's hero. You're tearing down somebody else's son. You might have to face her one day." - Kevin Costner

The humans retreated, non-human skirmishers among them. The mountain echoed with emptiness, like it was holding its breath. My scouts slowly followed the skirmishers on their way out, making sure that it was real. For a while, there was nothing but retreating forces to see, and my vision through the mini-map abruptly cut off at the edge of the mountain. My scouts followed the enemies almost to the end of the tunnel, sharing looks of relief, even as they kept gazing at the retreating enemies. Smiles erupted, and a few cheers rang out among them.

They celebrated too soon.

Ten minutes later, it started. Moving in lockstep, the reverberations were the first thing that hit my scouts. I saw one Talpus put his head down to the ground, then leap up in alarm. Moments later, they heard something. One of them started running back from where they were. The other stayed... and soon, I had confirmation. The humans were coming back. They had only retreated to re-organize and rethink their approach. This time, they didn’t throw full companies of Secondary soldiers ahead like cannon fodder.

Still, they didn’t let their precious human soldiers go first and face the brunt of our ambushes. Of course not. A smaller smattering of non-humans, lightly armed and armored, had spread out right in front of the human army. Damn. The humans had apparently become suspicious enough of the skirmishers that they didn't trust them to act by themselves. Clever, but... frustrating.

That did neutralize the point of the next couple of sliding doors we'd prepared. I doubted that we'd be able to steal away the few hundred non-humans that preceded the shining human formations, close as they were to the rest of the enemies. No. We would have to move straight to the real battle. Heh. Somebody was going to enjoy this. Creive had been looking forward to testing his mettle against theirs.

I sent the message for our shamans to shut the doors before retreating. We could do with the extra time to make sure that we were ready. But... yeah, we were. We'd planned this, we'd prepped the area as best we could, and we were prepared to lay the hurt on the enemy. The only detail I really hated was that we weren't going to avoid hurting the skirmishers. Because... Creive's domain was ready.

The soldiers poured into the cavern. In tight formations, they moved in unison, terse commands and shouts penetrating the silence among the defenders. As they pushed away from the tunnel opening leading to the cave itself, they divided into companies, forming up on the far side of the huge place. We let them. It was all according to plan.

I dispensed with the mini-map this time. They were right there in front of me. As their numbers grew, so did their tension.
